I’m always on the lookout for little nuggets of wisdom that shine a light on the human condition, that teach us how to use our minds in healthier ways, that help us to find inner bliss no matter the inner circumstances.
Thankfully, the more you look, the more you discover. These nuggets of wisdom keep popping up all over the place. In books, in songs, in podcasts, in conversations…
I see myself as a curator of wisdom, finding these little morsels that give me the most value, the most inspiration, the most illumination and the most benefit when I need it most.
These beautiful quotes fit the bill nicely and I believe they work well as a pair:
You are not your mind.
Eckhart Tolle
The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.
Robin Sharma
As a young man, I was a very rational person – I always wanted my choices to be backed up by sound logic. I believed rational thinking was one of the hallmarks of a good person.
But I was enslaved by my mind; I had trouble sleeping because my whirring mind would keep me up at night and I longed for inner peace.
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,
Bob Marley
None but ourselves can free our minds
Wisdom gives us the ability to distance our selves from our minds, to reflect upon our thoughts and to decide whether to act on them, to reject them or to let them go.
This is not easy, but we get better with practice. In many ways it is the work of a lifetime.
However, the reward is invaluable because it helps us to develop the ability to make our inner life a paradise, no matter what is happening in the outer life.
But if we are not our minds, then what are we? Let’s save that for next time.
